Studying The Workings Of Turbomachinery Products

By Marissa Velazquez

Engineering students have the opportunity to study courses that involve the workings of turbomachinery products, and could aim to end up working as a steam turbine assembler or as something similar. There are several educational facilities that offer courses teaching students about systems engineering, mechanical design techniques and tools. Someone who is interested in these types of machines may be interested in gaining an education for this line of work.

Firstly, make sure that you are interested in steam turbines, and are keen to work with them. As a quick explanation, they are machines designed to cause thermal energy to make something else mechanical work, or rotate. A good example that most people can relate to is the steam engine. Steam engines have reciprocating pistons designed with a pumping motion.

The size of steam turbines can be quite different. You get the much smaller ones that operate pumps and compressors, and they only work with about 0.75 kW. Then you will find the larger ones that are capable of generating electricity, and they work with up to 1.5 million kW. These types of turbines are often located in power stations, and are known for their high performance. They can produce sufficient energy.

Most things nowadays can be studied offline or online. The choice will depend on your lifestyle and how much time you have to devote to your studies. A brick and mortar college will have classes at certain times that you will have to attend, but studying online will allow you more flexibility in regards to time. The prices may also vary quite considerably.

While studying online is convenient, you might be missing out on some practical work that can only be done at a college with a physical location. Practical work can be very beneficial to see how the machines work. Find out from your college what the courses involve, and then compare them to the ones offered on the internet.

To study various kinds of engineering, such as mechanical, industrial or marine, you can consider education from GE Energy, or a similar establishment. You can take a graduate course that offers a variety of subjects, including the workings of heavy-duty rotary equipment, generators, thermodynamics and motors. Students will need to be computer literate as well, familiar with the general computer operating systems.

The courses available may focus on different aspects of steam turbines. For example, you may be more interested in designing the machines than operating them. In this type of course you will learn about the design of blades, gas dynamics and the thermodynamics of turbines.

Students may choose to learn more about the classification of turbines. These courses allow you to learn about the systems that control the machines, and students will know how they are maintained and how they can be developed. You must have a high school diploma to study turbomachinery products. The places of education will most likely also accept a GED qualification for enrollments.
